Yugoslavian Partisan Memorials

These amazingly beautiful concrete memorials can be found throughout the landscape of the former Yugoslavia.  During the 1960s and 70s, thousands of them were created to commemorate the Second World War.  They are called ‘Spomeniks.’  These are not reminders of fighting and death; rather, they were erected to honor the “life, resistance, and energy” of the Yugoslav guerrilla fighters. These futuristic/apocalyptic/brutalist monuments will give you an entirely new appreciation for the concrete you pound every day!
