Before America Had Talent there was Puttin’ On the Hits

Puttin’ On the Hits had a pretty basic concept that required little to no talent – lip-sync to your favorite hit, and give your performance everything you’ve got. It was a bit like going to a Britney Spears concert (or most pop shows today for that matter), except without the costumes, back-up dancers, or fancy props.  Instead, teens across the nation would compete at shopping malls for the chance to go to Universal City Studios to put on their talentless act for a panel of celebrity judges …

Yes, half an hour of air time was dedicated to lip-synchers each weekend from 1984 to 1988.  Puttin’ on the Hits was the show that made you the “star” that you’d always wanted to be, but didn’t have the talent to achieve.  Who needs talent anyways?!
