Before Transformers and Men In Black, Back to the Future and The Goonies, E.T. and Jaws, Steven Spielberg made a little gem called Duel. The movie was made in 1971 as an ABC Movie of the Week, and its runaway success established Spielberg’s place as a capable film director in Hollywood. But more than anything, Duel is an amazing movie that manages to be excellently frightening without actually having anything explicitly scary in it (it’s only rated PG!). Duel does not feature a bad guy, has no violence, includes very little dialogue, and does not have any intense moments of suspension; instead, the movie tells the story of a traveling salesman drive mad by a mystery man driving one bad truck!
