Skaterdater

Skaterdater is a pretty rad little obscure short film from 1965.  Produced by Marshal Backlar, and written and directed by Noel BlackSkaterdater is arguably the first skate video.  The film features no dialogue, a great surf rock soundtrack by Mike Curb and Nick Venet with Davie Allan and the Arrows, excellent skating from members of the neighborhood Imperial Skateboard Club of Torrance, California, and a pretty sweet little story.

Skaterdater won the Palme d’Or for Best Short Film at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival, and it was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Short Subject category the same year. It also won first prizes in international film festivals, including Moscow and Venice.  So yeah, it’s a pretty cool thing.
