WET: The Magazine of Gourmet Bathing

WET was a West Coast-based magazine for hipsters before true hipsterdom was officially born.  Just imagine … a magazine of gourmet bathing!

Launched by Leonard Koren in 1976, the magazine lasted 34 issues before it went under in 1981. While afloat it covered the likes of David Hockney, David Byrne, David Lee Roth, David Lynch, Dick Dale, Debbie Harry, Chrissie Hynde, Sissy Spacek, Tim Leary, Merle Haggard, Mick Jagger, Henry Darger, Henry Miller, Helmut Newton, and on and on.  You can’t get a much cooler cast of characters than that.

Everyone who wanted to be someone vied to be a part of WET.  It was the magazine that introduced New Wave and Postmodern graphics to the US, and featured articles and cartoons on a distinctly L.A. aesthetic that emerged around the time of punk.  I still think it looks as cool as ever, what about you?!
